Essex county - the most populous in the United Kingdom - will be embarking on an interesting experiment this coming fall. In an attempt to reduce the county government’s energy consumption by a third, the council has passed an initiative to turn off select street lamps in its rural townships from midnight until 5am.
Timer […]

The Ultimate Solar Hot Dog Cooker!

Check out this bad boy! The gang from the Alternative Energy Zone - which is a Burning Man community that bills itself as ‘free of stinking, noisy, polluting generators‘ (see here) - are the mad inventors behind this rather unique weiner roaster.
I guess cooking your processed meat tubes over a pile of burning sticks […]

Unfortunately, I don’t know any welders. I wonder […]

Flickering Solar LED Candle Lanterns

These are cool - Renaissance Lanterns from SmartHome. They’ve taken your standard solar-powered LED garden lights and turned them into old-fashioned looking lanterns wherein the light actually flickers like a candle.
Made of glass and metal, a full-day of sunny goodness provides enough charge for up to 10 hours of nightly illumination. The units […]

Windy Flower Power

The Dutch government recently asked some designers to come up with ideas for new styles of wind mills that might better blend in with the landscape. One group - calling themsleves 100MW Mountains - suggested grouping up to 10 turbines in arrangements like a floral bouquet.
I’m not sure what to make of the idea. […]
