America’s Top 25 Green Power Buyers
The US Environmental Protection Agency released its most recent Green Power Top 25 List earlier this week. Among the highlights was the news that renewable energy use within the EPA’s 600-member strong set of ‘partner’ organizations had almost doubled to over four million megawatt-hours for the year of 2005.
The US Air Force retained the top spot with a little over a million megawatt-hours of green juice and the highest placing corporate member is Whole Foods Market, who rocketed into the #2 spot (from 8th) with their recent decision to go 100% renewable. Other notables in the list…
- The EPA itself comes in at #3 just shy of 250,000 MWh for 83% of their total power use.
- Johnson & Johnson is second highest corporate buyer - 4th overall - with a little over 240,000 MWh and 24%.
- Starbucks comes in #6 with 150,000 MWh for 20% of their total use.
- FedEx Kinko’s jumped from 24th up to 19th with 40,600 MWh for 15%.
The total amount of green juice bought by the top 25 in the list was enough to power more than 300,000 homes and the reduced carbon emissions is comparable to about 400,000 less cars on the road.
