High Rise Solar Power Mandated in India
From a recent edition of the Telegraph newspaper in Calcutta, India, comes the announcement that the West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA) is pushing to make the use of solar power mandatory in new multi-storeyed buildings. The agency has urged the urban development department in Calcutta, with a population of over 14 million, to make amendments to the laws and recommended that plans for new multi-storeyed building projects be rejected if they do not include the use of solar power.
Manas Roy Chowdhury, a developer in south Calcutta, thinks steps such as the one mooted by WBREDA will pave the city’s future.
“Use of solar power will help people save electricity and will not increase the cost of a flat,” he pointed out.
As Jon pointed out in his comment in this Unplugged Living post from last week, self sufficiency and renewable power issues are as important in urban regions as they are in rural, but of course the means to achieving them can be very different. I think it’s going to be interesting to watch projects like this one to see whether they can work in the long term and then can replicated thoughout other urban environments.
