Honda Announces Entry into Solar Business
A good day for the solar industry as Honda Motor Co. has announced plans to build a new plant on the southwestern Japanese island of Kyushu where it will start mass-producing thin film solar cells. Production is expected to begin in 2007.
Honda is focussing on the thin film technology in an apparent end run around the ongoing silicon supply issues. Thin film production uses only half as much energy and generates 50% less carbon dioxide compared to current conventional silicon solar cell production.
The Japanese automaker is aiming for $40 million to $70 million USD in annual sales once the facility reaches full capacity of 27.5 megawatts (enough to power 8,000 homes). This move represents a resounding endorsement for solar technologies as a company of Honda’s stature chooses to compete against such established solar producers as Kyocera, Sharp and Mitsubishi.
Here’s a Reuters article from Yahoo news with further details.
