Unplugged Living

Hotelito Desconocido - Off the Grid in Mexico

by Kevin Humphrey on October 28th, 2005

Hotelito DesconocidoHere’s a new feature that I’m introducing to Unplugged Living…Off-the-Grid Vacations…instead of just doing general articles on eco-travel though, I’m going to focus on actual resorts, hotels, etc that are completely energy self-sufficient. If any of you know of any cool places to vacation at or get away to for a weekend that are off-the-grid, please feel free to drop me line with their web site address.

Our first Off-the-Grid Vacation profile is going to be on Hotelito Desconocido, a small luxury resort located about 60 miles south of the Puerto Vallarta airport, nestled beneath the Sierra Madre mountains along the ‘Costa Alegre’ in Jalisco, Mexico.

Hotelito‘ generates it own power via solar means and that’s only used for indispensable resort needs like hot water and refrigeration. At night, the rooms and restaurant are lit by hundreds of candles and luminaries light the pathways that meander throughout the property. Beyond that, guests are left off-the-grid to enjoy some true downtime.

Amenities like creams and such are 100% natural, the water comes from a neighbouring estuary, and the food is prepared with fruits and vegetables grown in their own organic garden. The owner and founder, Marcello Murzilli, explains his philosophy as…”Hotelito was created for the new millennium. In every aspect, it speaks of change, and of taking care of nature.”

Hotelito Desconocido has got a great web site which you can find at this link here, with lots of details and photos of the resort to dream away to.

    Kevin,
I love you…I just found your article about Hotelito Desconocido. My plan is to build an off the grid vacation lodge in the mountains near where I live, in North Carolina.
Thank you for all you are doing to support eco travel. I cant wait to read more.
You are the best and I hope to meet you one day soon.
    Becca

Hi — I came across your blog while doing research for a trip to Puerto Vallarta later this winter. It will be an easy trip as my husband Kelly and I are living near Guadalajara. This place sounds fabulous but alas the prices are a bit rich for our blood… but we are on similar wavelengths to what you are doing with this blog, as Kelly has a popular site, http://www.greenhomebuilding.com. (I put my PV link for my site on Mexico in the website space, so clicking on my name takes you there.)

If you’re looking for real paradise unplugged, check out this completely self sufficient Estancia in South Patagonia, Argentina:
    http://www.cielospatagonicos.com/english/condor.html

They receive guests on an exclusive bases and you find yourself riding horses and fishing in a virgin landscape.

    Absolutely worth it!
