Keep Air In For Power Later

by Noel on May 2nd, 2007

This is some kind of cool little device that is going to give us power by keeping in some air for use later. You see, what is cool about this one is that it stores in wind so that even when there is nothing blowing about, you can still get the power you need.

This new system is created and developed by General Compression. And what they have created so far is this device that packs in air which is compressed inside its chambers. When needed, the air is let out so as to create wind.

After all, Michael Marcus, the president of General Compression, talks about the problem with taking power from the wind: “The problem with wind is intermittency. It does not garner high prices from power purchasers because it is not schedulable… (but) you can get a higher price if it’s available on demand.”

How does this go about? Here’s what MSN says: “Its plan calls for sending highly compressed air down the tower and into underground storage, such as caves or depleted gas wells, or through pipelines. The pressurized air can be released when needed to power an electricity generator, even if wind is not spinning the turbine’s blades.”

Interesting, isn’t it?
