Law Makes Consumer Electronics Companies Recycle

by Noel on February 24th, 2007

Last Thursday, a House committee actually did come up with a new law and new regulation that would entail all creators of consumer electronics to actually do their share in recycling their products. However, it looks like the new law would be made into reality in the state of Minnesota only.

This looks like a back-up to the other state law in Minnesota that was passed and had taken effect last July. The former state law mandated that throwing away all electronic devices - from your old television set to your most high technology iPod - is mandated to be illegal.

The new law then would be actually so as to help keep the environment clean and free from such pieces of trash. With only a few recycling programs going around the state of Minnesota, this one surely needs all the help that it can get.

However, such a state law has been discussed many times over for some do believe that it is kind of harsh and would only drive away those who may have wanted to set up business in the state.

My mother and I discussed this kind of possibility in the past. It would be nice to see something to make recycling electronics easy and common practice. Our notion was to focus on the store level. Have a recycling fee when you purchase, and a rebate when you bring the old stuff in.

Old electronics can actually be sold in ebay. Antique radios whether working or non-working are usually used as decorative pieces.

For the current consumer electronics, I remember seeing a scupture before made from old electronic parts. A couple of wires, nuts, bolts, motors, and a few others can be glued together to form a robot sculpture.
