Nevada Solar One Moves Forward

by Kevin Humphrey on February 8th, 2006

Nevada Solar One Moves ForwardHot on the heels of the news from Monday of the PRB & SunEdison Solar PV project in Nevada comes word via Michael at GroovyGreen that the Nevada Solar One thermal project is set to break ground this week. Billed as the largest thermal solar plant to have been built in the last 15 years, this development will defintely put the state of Nevada on to the renewable energy map.

Solargenix Energy are the folks behind Nevada Solar One, which is projected to produce 64 MW of juice once it’s completed in the next 12-14 months. The plant will be using a parabolic trough technology whereby mirrors heat fluid in a receiver that generates steam which powers turbine generators.

Some cool factoids on this project…This plant will produce enough energy to supply about 40,000 homes and will reduce emissions equal to taking 1 million cars off the road. The start-up costs are pegged at over $100 million and the mirror farm will cover about 350 acres. Wow!

Michael has got some great photos and graphics over at GroovyGreen detailing how the system works that are worth checking out if you haven’t seen them yet.
