New Jersey to Use Swamps for Solar Power
The famed Meadowlands - also affectionately known as the swamps of New Jersey - are a wetland area located across the river from Manhattan. The region is in the midst of recovering from decades of abuse at the hands of heavy industry and earlier this week it was announced that it will also become one of the leading areas for solar power generation in the US.
The state of New Jersey has set a goal of having 20 mW of energy produced by renewable sources in the region by the year 2020. Of that 20 mW, their intention is to have 5 mW of it generated by solar power at installations throughout the Meadowlands area. The estimated cost is being pegged at $25 million to $30 million US and they hope to have the first panels up and making juice by the end of next year.
Here’s a Reuters article with more details.
