NewsFlash - Solar Powered Stuff Needs Sunlight
An enlightened plan by city officials in Cheektowaga, New York (just outside Buffalo) to line their thoroughfares with solar-powered street lights hasn’t quite worked out as planned. Apparently, when the region experienced a recent record setting spell of sunless days - 13 in a row - those fancy solar-powered street lights didn’t work as planned. Many of them failed to come on or stay on all night. Funny that!
Johnson Controls, the company behind the conversion of several hundred gas-powered street lights in Cheektowaga over to solar power has admitted that it’s a battery issue. They’re only capable of holding enough charge for two days.
The city officials are a little peeved because Johnson Controls originally assured them that the region’s notoriously gray days would not affect the lights’ performance. Add on to that the number of complaints from local residents over how ugly the units are and how they weren’t putting out enough light even when they were working, and you’ll see why the town now wants to go electric.
So, there you are folks! Proof positive that solar-powered appliances require sunlight.
