Reduce Our Dependence Deja Vu
So, seems like everybody’s talking about Big W’s speech from last night, where he managed to mutter in his always eloquent manner, “America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world. The best way to break this addiction is through technology.” Well, duh!
Now, if by chance, you may have thought that the sentiment that Junior expressed in regards to reducing America’s dependence on foreign oil sounded a bit familiar, congratulations, because it is. As the fine folks at ThinkProgress point out, this whole ‘reduce our dependence‘ spiel is one that Junior keeps trotting out for the State of the Union speeches.
- 2002 SOTU - “…so America is less dependent on foreign oil.” (Link)
- 2003 SOTU - “…much less dependent on foreign sources of energy.” (Link)
- 2004 SOTU - “…make America less dependent on foreign sources of energy.” (Link)
- 2005 SOTU - “…makes America more secure and less dependent on foreign energy.” (Link)
Of course, the funny part comes when you step out of the Beltway, into that quirky realm called Reality, and realize that America’s dependence on foreign oil has actually increased from 58 percent in 2000 to 66 percent today (link to PDF from doe.gov). Funny, huh?
You know, some days I like to sit back and daydream of how one day we might actually elect people into office who don’t lie and treat us like idiots.
Here’s that post at ThinkProgress on SOTU Deja Vu.
