Refrigerator That Does Not Use Any Electricity

by Noel on December 9th, 2006

clay pot refrigerator

Farmers from poor rural areas who live in hot climate with little electricity can now rejoice because they can keep their produce longer.

Refrigeration has long been a problem for such farmers.  The cost of refrigeration, and the lack of electricity are forcing farmers to rush their crops to the market and sell them at very low prices to prevent their crops from spoiling.
Mohammed Bah Abba, a native of Nigeria designed an ingenious solution to this problem.   He used two earthenware pots on top of each other and in between these two pots, he layered it with fine, wet, river sand then on top is a moist jute bag.

The thermodynamics involved is simple.  When water from the sand evaporates, it cools the inner container.    Something similar to what you feel when you have sweat and it evaporates.  It lowers down your temperature.

As a result, Mohammed’s desert refrigerator allows produce to stay fresh for weeks, so less food is wasted, and farmers are able to increase their profits. Mohammed sells around 30,000 coolers a year to farmers and other people who want to preserve food for their families and communities.

Teriffic way to use nature. Same principal as flax water bag for cool drink on dry arid desert.Sun is our friend as well as it is our death. When we observe and obey it will sustain us.Same old sun forever. Study desert survival and think.
