San Francisco’s Solar Tour Last Weekend
Last week I did a post on the US National Solar Tour Day that took place this past Saturday. Elsa from the greener side blog has done up a cool post of her travels that day visiting tour locations throughout San Francisco.
Elsa started out at a preschool in the Portrero Hill area that’s owned by a fellow named Richard Katz. In discussing his set-up, Richard says in regards to solar, “It’s very expensive energy but you get the right feeling through this.”
(Update - Seems I goofed on the previous paragraph. Elsa wrote me to point out that the pre-school was where they signed up for the tour and then Richard Katz’s home was the first stop from there. Mr Katz does not own the aforementioned pre-school. Ooops.)
A number of stops on the San Francisco Solar Tour were used to also showcase electric cars thanks to the S.F. Electric Vehicle Association, who co-sponsorshiped the event. Elsa’s second stop took her to the home of William Laven who is the owner of a Sparrow car, a rather unique one-person electricmobile. William’s Sparrow was the 34th one built and has a tendency to run less than one would like, but it still looks like a cool vehicle to have parked in the driveway.
Elsa was only able to catch 5 of the 10 homes on the tour, but I found the last one interesting in that the owner, Marc Dybbuk, a self-confessed ‘old hippy’ has got a 2002 Toyota Rav4 SUV that’s been converted over to electric power, which he charges off of his solar system. As Elsa points out in her post, “You could say that running an electric car charged on such a solar-powered system is like driving on sunshine.”

Here’s the link to the NorCal Solar tour page and a link to San Francisco Electric Vehicle Association’s web page for details on that EV Rav4.
