Scotland May Mandate Renewable Energy in New Buildings

by Kevin Humphrey on July 12th, 2006

Scotland May Mandate Renewable Energy in New BuildingsJeff at Sustainablog has pointed to an interesting development taking place in Scotland. Earlier this week, government officals proposed a change to the region’s building code that could lead to a significant boost in renewable energy use.

If implemented, it would become mandatory for all new housing developments and other buildings to generate a minimum of ten per cent of their energy use from wind, solar, and other renewable sources on-site. How cool is that?

Keeping in mind that this is still just a proposal, it’ll definitely be interesting to see how this unfolds. Both Jeff at Sustainablog (here) and Calvin at Climate Change Action (here) have got some more details and here’s an article from the Scotsman on the announcement.
