Solar Decathlon Opens to Public Friday
The Solar Decathlon has been taking shape over the last week on the National Mall in Washington, DC, and tomorrow, Friday, Oct 7th, the event will open to the public. If you’re not familiar, the Solar Decathlon is a competition in which 18 teams of college and university students from the US, Canada and Spain compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive and efficient solar powered house.
The teams have been at the Mall for a week now, building their entries and forming a vertiable solar village. The village of solar homes, along with a number of energy efficiency and renewable energy exhibits and activities opens to the public on Friday the 7th and will remain open until Oct 16th.
The team’s homes will be closed to the public on Oct 12th for competition judging purposes as the teams vie in 10 different contests to determine an overall winner of the Decathlon. Contest categories range from architecture and documentation to appliance, lighting and energy balance among other things. Here’s the contest page for more details on what’s being contested.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is the primary sponsor of the Solar Decathlon and this is the second edition of the event. The first was held back in 2002.
Here’s the link to the main competition web site and they also have have a weblog up and running, dubbed the Solar Decathlog, to provide frequent updates on the event from many sources including actual team members.
