Solar Tech Makes Its Way to Mexico

by Noel on April 3rd, 2008

Public schools need all the help they can get. And thanks to a student project from the University of North Texas, 12 public schools in Zacatecas, Mexico would be able to use their computers with the help of the sun.

The student project from UNT was created by a team of engineering students. They started building the project last year. This project is composed of a solar panel and they had tested it in a middle school in the mentioned state in Mexico. With the solar panel placed strategically where it can get much of the sun’s power, it can store a good amount of energy. Then, it transforms the heat of the sun into power and it is then stored in a battery. That battery then gives juice to the school’s computers.

Students and faculty of the school have been very grateful for the project because before the project has been installed in the school, the faculty had to use a very long piece of extension cord and they had to plug this across the street where a building with electricity stood. That was how the school got electricity.
