South African, Bangladeshi: Winners of Environment Honor

by Noel on October 6th, 2007

One individual and one group took home the UNEP Sasakawa Prize for the year 2007 - Jeunesse Park (who hails from South Africa) and Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha (which is an NGO in Bangladesh).

The UNEP Sasakawa Prize is an honor given to individuals or groups each year. The winners get to take home the prize money of $200,000. Plus the honor of course. And not everybody can be a winner of course. Only those individuals or groups who have been able to contribute much to the move towards protecting and managing the environment can be deemed finalists (and later on, winners).

Park says, “it has been rewarding to recently see the growing interest in this crucial global crisis and to know that we have played a small part in facilitating action in South Africa.”

Also, Shidhulai’s executive director, Abul Hasanat Mohammed Rezwan, speaks of the honor when he said that the prize money would help them continue their work and help out other people as well.

Way to go guys! Kudos!
