Students Building Solar House

by Noel on March 8th, 2008

$100,000 grant. With that amount, a group of students from the Rice University are building themselves a house that is going to get its power from the sun. The grant was given by the United States Department of Energy and the students are going to build themselves a solar house by 2009.

The grant given was actually part of a competition that the US government branch was having. This year, 20 teams were chosen to participate and those students from Rice were one of the chosen groups. $100,000 is their given budget and the students would be working on that amount to build a house. During the judging, the US Department of Energy would look at the houses built and they would be choosing the best house that the teams built.

Roque Sanchez is a junior from Rice and also a part of the team. He said, “These are schools with a lot less experience and a lot less clout than Rice has. I knew there was interest in projects like this about renewable energy and building systems at Rice so I figured that the waters were good for this sort of project to go on.”
