Sun & Wind Gives Power To Street Lights

by Noel on February 5th, 2007

We all have heard and learnt about street lights being powered by the sun. However, it has been quite a surprise for me to learn about street lights getting its power not only from the sun but also from the wind as well.

Such a kind of street lights is currently being tested in the city of Barrie in Ontario. And the street lights are used on the waterfront of the city. And the lamp system of the lights are used as a beacon. In previous years, the lights were named as the remote hybrid system which is primarily because the energy is taken from both the sun and the wind.

Barry Thompson is the city’s energy and environment officer and he shares, “It’s a light, like a light you would have on a trail. Our intent with this would be to use it in parks and hard-to-service places, spots that are a long way from the electrical grid, for safety and securiyt purposes.”
