SUNY Canton to Offer Bachelor’s in Alt-E

by Kevin Humphrey on January 16th, 2006

SUNY Canton to Offer BachelorNew York State’s Canton College of Technology in Massena Canton has announced that they will begin offering a four-year bachelor’s degree program in Alternative and Renewable Energy Applications. The New York State Education Department and the State University of New York have given their approval for classes to begin in the Fall semester of this year.

From an article at TMCnet.com

The program will teach students about fuel cells, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric and solar power and biofuels. Canton Tech already operates several environmentally friendly renewable energy sources, including the ability to make biodiesel fuel.

A methane digester will also begin supplying natural gas to the campus from manure produced at a nearly farm this fall. The digester will capture the methane gas produced by the teRiele family farm’s 600-plus cows and pipe it under Route 68 to furnaces on campus. The digester is expected to generate about 500 kilowatts of power.

According to the SUNY Canton’s press release, more than 20 students have already expressed interest in the program. No doubt those numbers will rise as news gets out. A wise move on the part of SUNY in response to the growing need for properly trained folks in these technologies.

UPDATE: Thanks to Greg for pointing out that SUNY Canton is actually in Canton, not Massena. I have no idea where I came up with that one.

Interesting post - SUNY Canton isn’t in Massena, it is in Canton. The college does have a satellite education center located in Massena.
