Uganda Gets New Recycling Company

by Noel on January 31st, 2007

In Uganda, the plastics problem has become quite so huge that one group has decided to do their share in keeping the place clean and green. The help comes in the form of a new comopany which has taken on the responsibility of recycling the area’s plastic bottles. This, of course, had cost the company $1 million in investment.

The manager of the new recycling company, Alex Byaruhanga, shares, “Companies that earned a bad reputation of littering the environment with waste have a way of overcoming it. We have started recycling the bottles and we need their waste as raw material.”

Good thing, though, that other companies which can be called the culprits behind the plastics trash have decided to be part of the clean up and recycling. Perhaps this is because these companies are more than happy not to be tagged as one of the greatest culprits behind the tons of plastic bottles that have now become garbage.

How best can I help as a person to clean up the mess of plastics we generate?

If you have a recycling program in your community I guess it would be best to separate recyclable plastics. Some garbage collectors send these plastics to recycling plants.

Apart from that, one nice suggestion is to use paper cups instead of plastic cups, that would be better. And of course, use washable glasses, mugs.

There are no garbage collectors in Uganda. Rubbish is just burned at the side of the road, and inthe case of PVC waste, it releases dioxins as well as generally poluting the air in this beautiful country. What Levert Wafula was probably wanting to know was basic stuff like who is this recycling company, were are they, what’s their contact info, how can I clear up the mess in my town/village. Paper cups would of course be nice, but your average Ugandan doesn’t have a water fountain and would probably re use a plastic cup if he had one!

Unless we address the question of used plastic being collected for recycling, we are wasting time. Policy implementation is still a big challenge for Uganda. The culture of throwing solid waste any where must also be addressed by both government and civil society-its eating up our aesthetic values.
