Xcel Energy Aims to be King of Wind Power
US electricity producer, Xcel Energy, announced today their intention to acquire an additional 775 megawatts of capacity for its Colorado wind power network by 2007, which will help make it the nation’s largest user of wind power.
Xcel currently has 282 mW of wind juice either in-service or under construction within Colorado and today’s news represents an increase in capacity of 275% in the state. Of course, as Xcel cautions, this is just an announcement and because much of the new capacity will come from independent developers, the end results may vary.
Companywide, Xcel is now operating in 10 states and combined, expects to have more than 1,100 mW of owned or purchased wind capacity on its system by early 2006, and then more than 2,300 mW of wind capacity by the end of 2007.
Xcel’s press release can be found at their web site here.

1 opinion for Xcel Energy Aims to be King of Wind Power

Nice press release, however you’ll have to forgive me if I am skeptical about Xcel’s commitment. For the past three weeks I have without success attempted to contact SOMEONE within the Xcel system who would be able to answer some basic questions about wind energy. We are considering installing a wind generator, however we need to know the mechanics connecting to the grid. NONE of the Xcel contacts but especially Karen Young, Xcel PR, in St. Cloud knows anything about this, furthermore HAS NO IDEA who I might contact within the system for more information. This seems very odd that for a company that is supposedly so commited to alternative energy that its employees would be so poorly informed.
